The Known Universe by AMNH

The Known Universe takes viewers from the Himalayas through our atmosphere and the inky black of space to the afterglow of the Big Bang. Every star, planet, and quasar seen in the film is possible because of the world's most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History.

are stars we can see with the naked eye, are they suns or galaxies?
April 16th, 2010 at 11:24 pm
I realized how small we really are O.O

Incredible. I just kept saying "my God….my God…"

Amazing. A data-driven (i.e. true) flight from the earth to the farthest reaches of the known universe and back again in only 6.5 minutes. It gives you a sense of our insignificance and miraculousness.

this makes me realize that I am nothing. And the horizon of space isnt the end of the universe thats just how far we can see. it goes even further.

@Iva2488 but u know if we could, we would most probabily take it over – knowing technology !?

From what i can see from the video we are located near at the centre of our cosmic horizon. How did they know the our cosmic horizon even exists yet alone a sphere :@
April 17th, 2010 at 1:08 pm
@sammysnakejones They are both. Some of the Stars we see with our naked eye are distant Suns/Stars and some are in fact groups of Stars like Galaxies, Solar Systems and a variety of other cosmic bodies. Some of the Stars we see at night are in fact not even Stars at all, they are planets reflecting the light back from our own Sun.
April 17th, 2010 at 2:00 pm
@megajolt Cosmic or cosmologic horizon is only an imaginary surface beyond which we have no incoming astronomical data due to distance ie. so distant their light has not still arrived to us and we cannot see them (until it does)

how insignificant is this dollar bill in my hand? its basically nothing. and yet it represents what our species today lives and dies for.
April 17th, 2010 at 4:59 pm
I dunno about you guys but one thing I get from this video is that it really makes me give a resolute "no" to dying for other people's problems, like killing the Taliban for women's rights or fighting insurgents in Iraq to save them from Saddam. Life is just plain to short to die for other people. I think we need to pull our troops out, they have one life to live so they should live it rather than give it all up for some INSIGNIFICANT people (we all are) that are so temporary!

Isn't it nice to be back home?
All humans and creatures on this planet are actually from one small family. We are like fungus which had grew and evolved – only permissible by Earth's billion years of stability.
